Frankfurt, Germany, June, 1967: Mom's interview with TV host Art Linkletter is going fine, but the kids don't seem to have plans to say anything, darndest or otherwise. Linkletter, who was taping a series of "House Party" shows on European bases, became famous for his entertaining interviews with children; they led to such books as "Kids Say the Darndest Things," which sold millions of copies.

Berlin, February, 1947: Berliners have traditionally been protective of their parks and trees, but during the bitter winter of 1946-47, survival came ahead of aesthetics. Here, several residents of the city divide up some fresh firewood in an effort to avoid the fate of 170 people who had already perished due to the elements.

Yokohama, Japan, January, 1989: A banner displayed at the Japan Bowl football game by U.S. Marines Jack Bejo and Harold Loving for the folks watching on TV back home localizes the traditional plea for spending money. Bejo, from West Virginia, and Loving, from Bradford, Va., are with 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines at Camp Fuji.
